How To: Create a Simple Pop Up Window

The First Option is just to open a new Window

Just make a simple link from your page to load a new window over the top. The disadvantage is that the viewer is presented with a blank screen that will then slowly load.

The Second Option is a Pop Up Window

A Pop Up Widow is a more sophisticated option and is ideally suited for rich media playback

Targeting Browsers

Firstly it should be noted that this second method is not politically correct for all.
It works only for those with modern Web Browsers. Version 5 and above. Functionality using Java, Behaviours and Scripts will vary from Browser to Browser and also across operating system. For this reason it is important that you thoroughly test your work with as many options as possible.

The method is simple

Dreamweavers functionality can be enhance using additional plug in code in the form of Behaviours and Commands. First a Behaviour attached to a low resolution image is used to create a pop up window. The size and position of the window is set through a dialogue box. Again create a second page to contain your rich media but then attach additional code to manipulate the page. Having successfully opened the second page many will question the need for any additional code, but it soon becomes apparent as you start to test. First it is possible cause the pop up to pop under and then if you keep clicking the open widows list will grow and grow. Adding the always on top command will prevent the window being lost from view and can help restrict the opening of further windows. Using a complimentary Behaviour to then close the widow will clean up behind us as we return to the main page. Another option is to attach a "close on blur" Behaviour to clean up as the viewer exits. The clean up options are less consistent as we change Browsers but the Close Browser Window will function from Netscape 4. / 4.7 onward and with others 5.0 Browsers like Opera or NeoPlanet.

This is a complete self-contained option, though with some minor problems.

The Dreamweaver Commands and Behaviours Illustrated can be further improved!
DIY implementation of several Commands and Behaviours can give a more robust implementation.

The Third Option is to use a Frame Set

This is requires more organisation at the start but external programs can be used to automate the process. Having covered Frames and Frame Sets, I think the best option is to highlight the automated options. Many Digital cameras have options for web presentations in the software suites supplied and most are frame based. Version 7 of Photoshop has an excellent tool with its Web Photo Gallery, 11 templates 2 with animated displays. Web Photo Gallery generates HTML pages from a folder of images and after creating all the code deposits the finished work in the folder of your choice.
